Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family, it was managed by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. When she was a infant, Ford struggled with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by the word association. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford then applied for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She already had her TV debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also regularly worked in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate gained recognition for her comedy stand-up and became part of her resume in 1996.
